For the first time in the year 2000, she was elected from Rairangpur seat, which is a reserve seat. In 2004, she came again from this seat. In the year 2000, she was the Commerce and Transport Minister in the BJP and Biju Janata Dal government, later became the Minister of Fisheries and Animals Department.

द्रौपदी मुर्मू का सियासी सफर रहा उतार-चढ़ाव से भरपूर
साल 1997 यही वो साल था, जब द्रौपदी मुर्मू ने पहली बार चुनाव में दांव आजमाया था और उसमें वो कामयाब रहीं। मुर्मू रायरंगपुर नगर पंचायत से पार्षद चुनी गईं। इसके बाद उन्होंने कभी पीछे मुड़कर नहीं देखा। द्रौपदी मूर्मू ओडिशा विधानसभा में 2 बार विधायक भी रहीं।पहली बार साल 2000 में वो रायरंगपुर सीट से चुनीं गई, जो रिजर्व सीट है।साल 2004 में फिर वो इस सीट से जीतकर आईं। साल 2000 में बीजेपी और बीजू जनता दल सरकार में वो कॉमर्स और ट्रांसपोर्ट मिनिस्टर रहीं, बाद में मत्स्य और पशु विभाग की मंत्री बनीं।

द्रौपदी मुर्मू ने अपने सियासी सफर में कई उतार चढ़ाव भी देखे, साल 2009 में उन्हें बीजेपी ने मयूरभंज लोकसभा सीट से मैदान में उतारा लेकिन सफलता नहीं मिली। द्रौपदी मुर्मू तीसरे नंबर पर रही। इसके बाद 2014 में वो रायरंगपुर विधानसभा सीट से बीजेपी के टिकट पर लड़ी लेकिन यहां भी उन्हें करीब 15 हजार वोट से हार मिली।द्रौपदी मुर्मू बतौर विधायक 2 चुनाव जीती और एक में उन्हें हार मिली,विधायक के तौर पर भी उनके काम का डंका बजा।
साल 2007 में उन्हें सर्वेश्रेष्ठ विधायक के लिए नीलकंठ अवॉर्ड से सम्मानित किया गया, ये अवॉर्ड उन्हें ओडिशा विधानसभा की तरफ से मिला।
द्रौपदी मुर्मू ने कभी हार नहीं मानी और वे लगातार आदिवासी समाज की बेहतरी के लिए काम करती रही।
केंद्र में मोदी की सरकार बनने के बाद उनकी किस्मत ने पलटा खाया और उन्हें राज्यपाल नियुक्त किया गया।
समय या श्रेष्ठ राजयोग अभी भी उनका इंतजार कर रहा था और उन्हें सब्र का बेहद मीठा फल मिला। इसीलिए वे आज देश की 15वीं राष्ट्रपति के तौर पर शपथ लेने का गौरव हासिल कर गई।
एक बेहद गरीब घर में जन्म लेने वाली द्रोपदी मुर्मू का देश के सबसे बड़े पद पर पहुंचना बेहद गौरवशाली है।
